Javelin Built- Periodization
Periodization in the Javelin Built Program
A blended block–complex model for year-round technical mastery, power, and durability.
JAVELIN BUILT COACHING BLOGJavelin Built blends block periodization (clear phases, shifting emphasis) with complex periodization (all key exercise categories present year-round). This hybrid approach protects technical skill while steadily building the physical foundation needed to throw farther and stay healthy. Furthermore, the Javelin Built system leverages the Bonderchuck Style System for its categorization of training components (exercises).
The Four Exercise Categories
Javelin/ball throws with competition, underweight, or overweight implements. Intensity and frequency rise as competition nears to sharpen specific power and point control.
Goal: specific power & technical sharpness
Lower-intensity throws, medicine ball work, and javelin running/technique drills. Breaks the throw into parts to reinforce alignment, sequence, rhythm, and relaxation. Can overload specific parts of the movement if desired.
Goal: focus on component parts of competitive event in isolation
Jumps, sprints, shot throws, Olympic & power lifts. Develops force and rate of force development that transfer strongly to the throw.
Goal: transferable strength & speed
Durability & fitness: cuff/scap/hip/trunk work, general strength, tempo runs, bodyweight “gymnastics,” low-intensity aerobic training.
Goal: structural integrity & athleticism
How Emphasis Shifts Across the Year
All four categories are present weekly; emphasis changes with the season:
| Phase | CE | SDE | SPE | GPE |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| General Preparation (off-season) | Low | Medium | Medium–High | High |
| Specific Preparation (late winter) | Medium | Medium–High | Medium | Reduced |
| Pre-Competition (spring) | Medium–High | High | Speed-strength focus | Maintenance |
| Competition (late spring/summer) | Dominant | Maintenance | Low-volume / high-intensity | Maintenance |
Advanced methods: In later phases, strategically use French Contrast pairings (heavy lift → plyometric → speed-strength → sprint/throw) and implement weight variations (over/under) to target specific adaptations without losing technique quality.
Why This Hybrid Works
- Constant technical reinforcement: CE & SDE are never removed.
- Balanced development: SPE & GPE build the engine and durability.
- Adaptive: Easy to tune for history, response, and schedule.
- Clear seasonal flow: Smooth shift from general to specific to peak.
- Performance when it counts: Athletes are sharpest in season.
Coach’s Note
Use the weekly thread of CE/SDE to protect skill transfer. Let SPE/GPE build athleticism and longevity. As meets approach, trade volume for quality, and connect the weight room to the runway.
